Despite scoring first for the second night in a row, the San Diego Gulls fall 4-1 to the Toronto Marlies to close out their season opening road trip.
After a scoreless first period, defenseman Tyson Hinds fired home the game’s opening goal at 4:35 of the second period with a snapshot from the top of the left circle. Forwards Jansen Harkins and Sam Colangelo were credited with the assists.
"It's a good play by the forwards. When we see an important opportunity to jump in there, we always try to do it as d-men. And it's nice passes, nice play, and I feel like it was a good breakout overall, and it was a nice play from the guys," Hinds said on his first goal of the season.
Alex Nylander evened the game with a power play goal at 13:39 of the second period. He would go on to score the Marlies next goal, also on the power play, with 12:47 remaining in regulation. Roni Hirvonen gave Toronto some breathing room when he tapped in a net front loose puck 1:27 later. Toronto’s final goal from Alex Steeves came with San Diego’s goalie Calle Clang pulled for the extra attacker.
"I think it was a better overall team game for us. We generated a little bit more offense, although it didn't show up on the score sheet," assistant coach Kris Sparre said. "Both games, liked our pushback right down to the final minutes. You look at yesterday, it's an unfortunate incident rate with two minutes left in the game, and then today's, it's an even game all the way through, and we got to find ways to score some more goals."
The Gulls return home and set their sights on the home opener at Pechanga Arena on October 18 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
