The San Diego Gulls will take on the San Jose Barracuda tonight at the Tech CU Arena (7 p.m. PT; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
This game follows San Diego’s two weekend matchups against the Tucson Roadrunners. Their first meeting was won by Tucson with a score of 5-2. But the Gulls came back stronger on Sunday, defeating the Roadunners with a final score of 4-2.
Both games saw goals scored by centers Josh Lopina and Jansen Harkins. "I think resiliency is a really big word for us," Lopina said after Sunday’s win. "The message was to stick with it, play determined, have fun, support each other, and that’s what we did."
Resilience was definitely the name of the game. After taking a 2-0 lead during the first period, San Diego kept the momentum up throughout the second and third periods.
"We needed a win," said right-wing Sam Colangelo. "It felt like a big win for the character of our group. It brought us together."
Colangelo scored his seventh goal of the season, a power-play goal, at the end of the second period, and Nikita Nesterenko scored an empty netter to close out the game.
"You look back at our last four or five games, we’ve done a lot of great things. Our team consistently continue to get better and round out the details," said assistant coach Kris Sparre. "We’re looking forward to that contest tomorrow."
San Diego and San Jose face off Wednesday night before the Gulls return home to face the Bakersfield Condors this weekend for Military Appreciation Night on Saturday (6 p.m. PT).
