The San Diego Gulls continue their road trip this evening where they will face off with the Ontario Reign at Toyota Arena (7 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
On Wednesday, the Gulls earned another win, this time defeating the San Jose Barracuda 5-4 in overtime. Team captain Ryan Carpenter netted the game-winning goal, his third overtime-winner this season.
"It’s special," said Carpenter. "It’s a close group of guys. There were some lines that were going really well. I think they carried us. I think myself, our line, maybe wasn’t as strong, but we started picking up in the third. It was nice to find a way to get two points, and we’ll take it."
At this point in the season, the players and coaches alike have their eyes set on a shot at a coveted spot in the playoffs. Every contest moving forward matters.
"It's huge to be playing in meaningful games," said assistant coach Kris Sparre. "It's so important for our young guys. And now we find ourselves towards the end of the season in a playoff race, and it's exciting. Every game is on the line. We started our playoff push a couple weeks ago, carried it through right into tonight, and it should make for a great April."
This weekend, the Gulls will see the Reign twice in back-to-back contests.
"We're excited for Ontario," added Sparre. "We've matched up very well against Ontario this year. We know we can beat them. It's a good hockey team over there. We're going to need our best from everyone."
The Gulls and Reign compete tonight before both teams hit the ice at Pechanga Arena on Saturday for their second consecutive matchup (6 p.m. PST).
