The San Diego Gulls will go head-to-head against the Coachella Valley Firebirds tonight, where they hope to secure their eighth straight win (7 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
On Wednesday, the Gulls wowed fans with an exemplary and record-setting contest. Goaltender Ville Husso made his San Diego debut, becoming the first goalie in team history to record a shutout debut.
Defenseman Tristan Luneau continued his seven-game assist streak, a new Gulls’ AHL record for assists in consecutive games, and Justin Bailey tied the AHL record for the fastest goal to start a period at four seconds to start the middle frame. New arrival Easton Brodzinski scored his first AHL goal during his San Diego debut.
It was a major night of milestones for the Gulls. Tonight, the team is prepared to keep this momentum working in their favor.
"It’s great," said assistant coach Kris Sparre. "The energy and pace in practice is infectious. Guys are excited to be at the rink right now. It’s always fun when you’re winning, this sport can really drag you down when things aren’t going well. The challenge always is when you’re having success is to be able to keep it. You almost have to work twice as hard to do that because teams are coming after you now, so for us it’s stay focused, keep the focus small, but it’s a lot of fun right now."
Tomorrow, the Gulls return for their second night of back-to-back contests, where they will host the Bakersfield Condors for the team’s first-ever Mardi Gras Celebration (6 p.m. PST).
