It’s going to be a tall task for the San Diego Gulls tonight, as they host the Abbotsford Canucks tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PDT; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
Abbotsford comes into tonight scorching, as they won nine straight games entering their Tuesday night matchup with Bakersfield. San Diego has had success against the Vancouver Canucks’ farm team this season, though, winning four games in seven tries so far this season.
"I expect kind of what we’ve seen all season," defenseman Dillon Heatherington said. "They’re a real organized, hardworking, detailed group. They’re a really good hockey club coming in [tonight], so that’s what we’re expecting and preparing for."
Ville Husso will likely backstop the Gulls once again, as the veteran netminder is equally as hot as Abbotsford. He’s won six straight starts for San Diego, and in those six wins, he’s allowed three goals or fewer in five.
Some more new faces are getting it done for San Diego lately as well. Defenseman Stian Solberg netted his first AHL goal on Saturday night, which proved to be the game-winner against Calgary. Former Canuck Carsen Twarynski has been putting up points for the Gulls as well, posting 3-2=5 points in six games since arriving from Abbotsford.
"To me, it’s a testament to our leadership and our locker room," assistant coach Kris Sparre said. "Our new people coming in, they feel welcome right away. They can feel that type of culture that we have and the standard that we’ve built. They know right away coming into the lineup that they’ve got to compete to play here, and you got to work."
The Gulls will play their final out-of-division games this weekend, as they hit the road for a pair of games with the Iowa Wild in Des Moines.
