Justin Bailey added on, scoring his second shorthanded goal of the game at 4:17 of the third. The Canucks are tied for fourth in the American Hockey League with 12 shorthanded tallies.
Gulls head coach Joel Bouchard made a goaltending change following the goal, pulling Eriksson Ek for Lukas Dostal. The Swedish netminder allowed three goals on 16 shots.
Jack Rathbone evened the score, putting one past Dostal with 24.9 seconds left in regulation.
Second Period Recap
The Gulls struck twice in 26 seconds to take a two-goal advantage on goals from Blake McLaughlin and Greg Pateryn.
McLaughlin opened the scoring at 2:17 of the middle frame, collecting his first AHL goal to put San Diego ahead.
Pateryn came down from the point to challenge the puck, freeing it to a cutting Buddy Robinson. The New Jersey native went below the goal line, finding McLaughlin near the bottom of the faceoff circle with a pass. The rookie collected the puck and fired a wrist shot to the far side, beating Abbotsford goaltender Michael DiPietro for the milestone marker.
Pateryn's pushed the lead to two with his second goal of the season.
Greg Printz broke up a rush attempt at the red line, finding Lucas Elvenes at the blue line to start San Diego's counter attack. The Swedish center sent the puck back to a streaking Printz, who cut toward the net. Instead of shooting, the forward pulled up and played the puck back to a wide-open Pateryn, who placed a wrist shot perfecly into the top of the net for his second point of the game (1-1=2).
Elvenes continues to torment the Canucks, collecting his 10th point against Abbotsford.
The Swedish center would score a power-play late in the second period to push the lead to three.
Alex Limoges carried the puck into the offensive zone, finding Danny O'Regan with a pass to the middle of the ice. The center drew the penalty kill in before dishing a pass to wide-open Elvenes, who one-timed the puck past a sliding DiPietro for his 11th goal of the season.
The 1-2=3 points matches a season-high for Elvenes, who twice reached the plateau earlier this season.
First Period Recap
Bailey opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal just 90 seconds into the game. Eriksson Ek misplayed a puck and Bailey pounced, taking it behind the net and tucking a shot past the sliding pad of the Gulls netminder for his 12th goal of the season.
A buzzer-beating power-play goal from Nikolas Brouillard sent the teams to the locker room tied at one.
With time winding down in the opening frame, Lucas Elvenes collected a loose puck off a Danny O'Regan centering feed. He switched positions with Brouillard, replacing the defenseman at the point. The center hit Brouillard with a pass, and the defenseman did the rest, one-timing a shot past DiPietro with one second left in the period.
Brouillard is tied for the most power-play goals among American Hockey League defenseman. Elvenes maintains his point-per-game pace against the Canucks, collecting his team-leading ninth point in his nine game against Abbotsford.
San Diego's recent power-play success against the Canucks is impressive. The team is 5/12 (41.7%) on the man-advantage in its last three games against Abbotsford.
