Preview: Gulls Conclude Preseason at Honda Center

Sep 30, 2019

The Gulls will conclude their final 2019 preseason matchup against the Ontario Reign tonight at Honda Center (7 p.m.). Tonight’s contest will be streamed live on FOX Sports GO. San Diego is 5-3-0-2 all-time in 10 preseason games, including 2-2-0-0 vs. the Reign at Honda Center.

The Gulls enter tonight coming off of a 5-2 road victory against the Reign Thursday at Toyota Arena. Though San Diego ended the first period trailing 2-0, the momentum shifted early in the second frame which began a stretch of five unanswered goals. Blake Pietila scored a hat trick in the contest while Jack Kopacka (GWG) and Corey Tropp also found the net for San Diego. Alex Dostie earned two assists, while each of Hunter Drew Justin Kloos and Patrick Sieloff added helpers. In his first appearance in a Gulls jersey, Anthony Stolarz stopped 30-of-32 shots in the win.

Thursday’s matchup was head coach Kevin Dineen’s first game back with the organization and the comeback win set the tone for how his team will approach the upcoming season.

"We got clicking and I think the whole team started slow. Once we got our feet under us, we made some plays and scored some goals," said Justin Kloos. "You need a couple minutes to get used to the competitiveness. It doesn't matter what the speed is. You need a couple shifts to feel your game."

More familiar faces have been added to the Gulls roster the last few days as Anaheim trimmed their roster by six. Goaltender Kevin Boyle, forwards Chase De Leo, Andreas Martinsen, Andrew Poturalski and Kiefer Sherwood, and defensemen Jani Hakanpaa have all jioned San Diego and could make an appearance tonight at Honda Center.

"It's been a long summer and it's been a long training camp," said newcomer Andreas Martinsen who joined the organization after splitting last season with the Chicago Blackhawks and Rockford IceHogs. "I think everyone's ready to play some real hockey.

Describing himself as a power forward that uses his size to be a difficult player to face, Martinsen spent the first part of last season playing for Dineen in Chicago.

"I liked (playing for Dineen) and I think he'll be a good fit for us," the Norwegian native said. "He wants us to work hard. Everyone is going to be on the same page, every time you step on the ice everyone will know what to do. We're gong to be playing for each other and playing hard every night."
