Ducks Mason McTavish Named To 2022 Canada Olympic Team

Hockey Canada announced today that Anaheim Ducks prospect Mason McTavish (Hamilton Bulldogs, Ontario Hockey League) has been named to its 2022 Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games from Feb. 3-20 in Beijing, China.

McTavish, 18 (1/30/03), scored 1-1=2 points with a +1 rating in three games with the Ducks to begin the season. In his NHL debut Oct. 13 vs. Winnipeg, McTavish became the youngest Duck to score a goal at 18 years, 256 days. He surpassed the previous mark set by Oleg Tverdovsky (18 years, 259 days) on Feb. 1, 1995 at Dallas, and he became the second-youngest player to score within 15 minutes of his NHL debut (scored at 13:20 of the first period) in more than 25 years (Nikita Filatov, Oct. 17, 2008 with Columbus vs. Nashville). He also added an assist, becoming the sixth player in Ducks history to record multiple points in his NHL debut (last: Jamie Drysdale, Mar. 18, 2020 vs. ARI; 1-1=2). 

Selected by Anaheim in the first round (third overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft, McTavish has scored 9-3=12 points with a +7 rating in seven OHL games with Hamilton and Peterborough. McTavish leads the OHL in goals per game (1.29) and ranks sixth among in points per game (1.71). He also leads the OHL in faceoff win percentage (64.5) among players with 100 faceoff attempts. McTavish has scored 38-16=54 points in 64 career OHL games.

The 6-0, 213-pound forward also scored 1-1=2 points in three games this season on a Conditioning Loan with the San Diego Gulls, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). McTavish spent the 2020-21 season with Olten of the Swiss League (Switzerland’s second division), scoring 9-2=11 points with a +4 rating in 13 games to lead all players 19-and-younger in points per game (.85) while he co-led in goals. 

A Canadian national born in Zurich, Switzerland, McTavish helped Canada to a gold medal at the 2021 U-18 World Championship, scoring 5-6=11 points in seven tournament games. He scored 3-2=5 points for Canada in two games at the 2022 World Junior Championship, tied for second among all tournament leaders in scoring and goals before the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.
