Despite forward Jan Mysak netting the equalizer late in the third period, the San Diego Gulls fall 4-3 to the Calgary Wranglers after Clark Bishop game-winning goal with 2:30 to play in regulation.
Defenseman Tyson Hinds got the scoring started tonight when he buried his second goal of the season at 9:45 of the opening period. Hinds scooped up a loose puck and fired a shot from the high slot to find twine. Forwards Jansen Harkins and Pavol Regenda tallied the assists. 1:46 later, Matt Coronato tied things up at 1-1. That’s where things would remain after the first twenty minutes of hockey.
"They have a good goalie. They're a hot team. But I think the way we played the first 12 or 14 minutes, we really played right and got the puck in their zone, put it north, hard, direct game, hunted the puck. I think that's probably our best first period," Gulls forward Sam Colangelo said. "But when you don't win, it's hard to have more moral victories. But I think that that's something that we can look back on in a few weeks, few months, and build off of."
San Diego regained the lead at 5:03 into the second period. Sam Colangelo pick-pocketed a Calgary forward and made a quick power move to the Wranglers cage to deposit his team leading fourth goal of the season. The defensive line pairing of Roland McKeown and Dillon Heatherington registered the helpers. The assist also marks Heatherington’s first point in a Gulls sweater this season. With 12:08 left in the second period, Ilya Solovyov tied the contest up once again. 2:56 later, Coronato scored his second goal of the night to give the Wranglers their first lead of the night.
Mysak’s equalizer came at 10:32 of the third period when he received a pass from Colangelo in the slot and knocked in his own rebound. The lamp lighter marked Mysak’s first goal of the season.
San Diego outshot Calgary 45-25 this evening and held them scoreless in all five of their power play opportunities. A big change in momentum came early in the third period when the Gulls killed off 1:44 of a Wranglers 5-on-3 power play.
"We certainly deserved a better fate I felt in in the game. Anytime you put up 45 shots with the Grade-A chances that we had," assistant coach Kris Sparre said. "It's unfortunate we come up with no points tonight, but a lot of positives."
San Diego will close out the final leg of their Canadian road trip Thursday night when they battle the Wranglers one more time before returning home.
