The San Diego Gulls are gearing up to challenge the Tucson Roadrunners tonight in the first of back-to-back contests this weekend at Pechanga Arena (7:00 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
San Diego and Tucson have met five times previously this season, with Tucson winning four of those contests.
"I think it’s two very similar teams, similar play styles," said Josh Lopina. "A kind of a blue-collar focus, I feel like from both teams. We just play them a lot. [We] get familiar with them, start to hate them a little bit. So, it just makes [for] fun hockey and competitive games, we'll be ready for it."
The Gulls are riding the momentum from their recent 5-1 victory against the Iowa Wild, a game that saw major milestones for the team.
Goaltender Calle Clang stopped a season-high 38 shots, Sasha Pastujov earned four assists, an AHL career-high, and Carson Meyer collected his first multi-goal game of the season.
"This homestand’s awesome," said Lopina. "Our fans bring good energy. We can feel that playing on home ice is big for us. We talk about it all the time. It's kind of the one advantage you get in a hockey game. So hopefully, we just keep utilizing that, having fun playing here in front of the fans. Just keep it rolling."
The Gulls return to Pechanga tomorrow night to continue the homestand, taking on the Roadrunners one more time (6 pm PST).
