San Diego showed America’s Finest Fans what it means to play Gulls hockey tonight but ultimately fell short to the Calgary Wranglers 6-5 in overtime.
Tonight’s contest wrapped up a five-game homestand the Gulls were playing on home ice at Pechanga Arena, where they went 2-2-1-0.
Calgary opened up the scoring in the first period and held the lead into the second frame.
Sasha Pastujov earned the first goal for the Gulls; a power play goal assisted by Tristan Luneau and Jan Mysak. This marks his 10th goal and 22nd point of the season.
The third period was one of the most action-packed so far this season. In a span of about two minutes, each team scored two goals one after the other.
Judd Caulfield started by tying the game at 2-2. The Wranglers netted one more right after and took the lead back.
Shortly after, Tristan Luneau scored, assisted by Caulfield and Nathan Gaucher, evening the score. Ultimately, Calgary got yet another goal, taking the lead 4-3.
It didn’t stop there. Tying the contest at 4-4, Pavol Regenda scored his fourth goal of the season assisted by Ryan Carpenter and Coulson Pitre. Nathan Gaucher got the final San Diego goal to put the Gulls back in the league at 5-4 with about five minutes left in the game.
Calgary got it back up to 5-5 with mere seconds to spare. In the overtime period, they nabbed their last one, ultimately taking the win.
"We played a really competitive game tonight, and through the first and second period we were we were strong," said assistant coach Kris Sparre. "Our team game was strong. It felt like it was only a matter of time before it broke. And you know, it's unfortunate, we don't come up with the win at the end. But, you know, it's a valiant effort by our team."
The San Diego Gulls are flying north again next weekend to take on the Wranglers yet again in two back-to-back contests at Scotiabank Saddledome.
